Fast-and-fun projects at Irish Country Quilting

At one day workshops we will be able to guide you through the process of making the block or blocks and borders. At two day workshops there is a good chance that your lap size/single bed size top will be finished. We start (both on one and two day’s workshops) at 10.30 am until lunch at 1pm. From 2pm until 4.30pm we have the afternoon session.

Please bring your sewing machine, rotary set and a basic sewing kit.

Pauline will tell or mail you the fabric requirements for each session and – if needed – the special tools or gadgets. Most of the time she can supply you as well with special machine feet, rulers etc.

Please note that you need approx. 4-5 metres total fabric for top and binding for a lap size quilt, approx. 5-6 metres for a single bed quilt, 6-7 for a double bed, 7-8 for a queen size and 8-9 for a king size quilt (all excluding the backing and wadding).

Fabric Boxes

FabricBoxOrganize with an artistic flair - a very simple A4 fabric box to help you clear clutter! The Christmas box is the same project using Christmas materials.

Make one unique box at our morning workshop, or two at the full day workshop. We start with a beautiful heirloom A4 size box kit for your correspondence, then you choose the second style. Choice of fabrics for both is yours. We supply the kits (€ 17.50), glue, brushes, etc. for the day.

Requirements for the A-4 box: Kit and 90cm fabrics - 40cm for the outside of the box, 50cm for the inside. (All other boxes: ask in shop.)

Cobblestones Quilt

CobblestonesThis easy quilt is perfect for beginners, or as a stress-free summer project.

It can be made from your own fat quarter stash - bring along as many pieces as you can - or from our charm rolls. Two charm rolls will make the centrepiece of a baby quilt; four is enough for the centre of a small single. If you like, you can allow the quilt to grow to double or king size by adding extra blocks and borders. At the workshop you will learn how to select and group colours, pre-cut your blocks and assemble the blocks in various patterns. We can then discuss finishing and quilting options.

Log Cabin

LogCabinThis adaptation of the traditional Log Cabin method gives an authentic look, but with speed, accuracy and no waste! It is possible to make all twelve blocks for the throw size quilt in one day. Although designed as a two-day workshop, participants may sign up for one day or both.

On day one we will cover colour selection, cutting and block assembly. The afternoon will be spent making as many blocks as you wish, or cutting all the elements of a larger project.

Those continuing on day two can spend the morning completing their set of blocks, while the basics of the pattern are gone over with newcomers. The afternoon of day two will be spent exploring the many and varied ways that Log Cabin can be laid out in quilts, and a chance will be given to all participants to plan the completion of projects begun at the workshop.

Window Quilt

IMG_1209A very transparent quilt, made with 16 of your favourite fat quarters!

The repeating pattern is easy to follow and the finished blocks are set on point. Piano keys as the border makes the quilt very complete.

All levels.

Requirements: 16 fat quarters and 2 ½ metre background fabrics.

Absolute Beginners

Everyone who quilts knows how terrifying it is to be confronted for the first time with beautiful fabric we have selected and a large pair of scissors - or even worse that evil-looking rotary cutter. But Pauline and her assistant Harriet will be on hand to guide you through your first steps. They will also be there to help you come to grips with an electric sewing machine perhaps a new one which you have just purchased for your new hobby, or maybe one which has sat in a cupboard for the last twenty years! This workshop will give you all the experience in one day to start any patchwork or quilt course afterwards! Pauline and Harriet work as a team, with Pauline teaching you to overcome your fear of cutting and Harriet being on hand to help you get to know and love your sewing machine. She will show you how to thread the machine, wind bobbins, set your tension, use the different stitches and feet and clean your machine.

Pauline will guide you through the process of cutting with the rotary cutters, using the measurements of the ruler and the boards and will give you an introduction on the different available rulers. Together will we produce a Roman Stripes wall hanging at the end of the day. Please bring your sewing machine(in good wrking order and with instruction manual), basic sewing kit, 0.5 m of background fabrics and 4 fat quarters. We supply the rotary set. Happy cutting and sewing!
